Coast cops join bikie blitz

SIX specialist Sunshine Coast police officers have been sent to the Gold Coast to join the State Government's war against bikies.

Despite those officers' secondment coming during one of the Coast's busiest holiday periods, senior police say it will have no impact on day-to-day operations.

The members of the Kawana-based Tactical Crime Squad are usually responsible for duties such as drug raids, major traffic operations and bikie-related crackdowns.

They make up the core of an eight-man team from the Central Region and are among about 40 extra police officers deployed to the Gold Coast.

Other Sunshine Coast police crews have been put on standby to respond to any serious altercations with the city's bikie gangs.

The extensive police campaign to bring down criminal bikie gangs was launched following a series of frightening attacks last month.

Police needed to use stun guns during one fight that broke out on September 27 near a Gold Coast tapas bar and involved about 60 people.

A second disturbance occurred a short time after outside the Southport watchhouse and involved bikie gang members.

Police have arrested more than 30 bikies and raided the homes of several known outlaws since the melee and the State Government is rushing through legislation designed to force the gangs out of the state.

Assistant Commissioner Steve Hollands said the extra resources would be allocated to the Gold Coast area for "at least a month" and target nightclubs and areas that bikies frequented.

A police spokesman said the task force approach being taken in the fight against the bikie gangs involved "borderless policing" where resources were shared from areas around the state to meet a specific law enforcement need.

"Resources are shared in a way as to ensure normal policing services are maintained in all areas," he said.

The six Sunshine Coast officers will remain on the Gold Coast for a fortnight.
