Mobile network launched
TWEED Heads CBD, Nerang and Coolangatta Airport locals should see an improvement in their mobile phone coverage following the launch of a super fast 4G LTE mobile network today.
Telstra CEO, David Thodey said Telstra would be delivering some of the fastest mobile download and upload speeds available anywhere.
"The high speed 4G network delivers mobile speeds scarcely imagined a decade ago," Mr Thodey said.
Tweed Heads couple, Jessica green and Kaine Jary said the speed up was welcome news.
"I'd like to see an improvement in the Tweed," Ms Green said.
"Sending pictures through the internet and via the phone has always been a major headache.
"The coverage has always been good, but speed is the issue."
Mr Jary said he was looking forward to better streaming for video calling.
"It's good to see we're catching up with the rest of the world at last," he said.
"Telstra Country Wide Area general manager for Gold Coast, Darren Clark, said the super fast speeds mean consumers in Tweed Heads CBD, Nerang and Coolangatta Airport Heads can download songs faster, get TV shows in minutes and do more things simultaneously.
"Telstra 4G will provide mobile broadband download speeds equivalent to customers who live in capital cities and in metropolitan suburban areas," Mr Clark said.
"Local customers will also be able to perform more advanced tasks on their mobile devices now and into the future.
"In addition to increased download speed, the increased bandwidth will facilitate improved quality pictures and images.
"This aspect is important to many people, such as the medical profession, where local practitioners regularly liaise with capital city specialists."
Mr Clark said Telstra is working with some of the world's leading manufacturers to bring 4G-powered smartphones and tablets to customers in the first half of 2012.
As well as supporting faster mobile speeds, Telstra 4G provides a more responsive internet connection, according to Mr Clark.
He said network latency (the time it takes for data to travel from a PC to the internet and back) is around half that experienced on current 3G networks meaning real-time applications like video conferencing, internet gaming and cloud-hosted streaming services work better with less buffering and fewer interruptions.
