Surf carnivals set till 2014

GOLD Coast City Council is planning to support two major surf carnivals in the region until 2014.

The Community and Cultural Development Committee approved $38,000 for the Quiksilver and Roxy pros in 2012, plus $40,000 in 2013 and 2014.

Committee chairman Councillor Bob La Castra said the council’s support for sporting and cultural events was an important investment in the city’s economy.

“These events bring an economic and social benefit to the city that often continues long after the event has finished,” Cr La Castra said.

Other festivals that the committee has earmarked for support are the 2011 Kirra Kite Festival with $10,000 in-kind support, 2012 Bleach – Surfing the Fringe with $35,000 and $5000 in-kind support and 2011 Queensland Murri Festival with $10,000 in-kind support and $20,000 for field preparation.
