Surf flick proves to be big hit
A SURF movie released this week was a big hit in the Tweed and southern Gold Coast.
For a region with a strong surf culture Jack McCoy's latest offering A Deeper Shade of Blue was always going to be popular but the size of the crowds at the sessions still surprised cinema operators.
Birch Carroll and Coyle Coolangatta marketing coordinator Natalie Boyd said the six sessions between Thursday and Sunday were almost sold out.
"I think we had almost 600 people see the film," Ms Boyd said.
"For a film with such a limited release it was very popular."
Award-winning director Jack McCoy's previous surf films include Occy the Occumentary and Blue Horizon and he is a widely respected film maker.
The story, told through 11 chapters and featuring leading surfers including Jordy Smith, Jamie O'Brien and Stephanie Gilmore, describes the evolution of surfboards from wooden blanks to today's cutting edge boards for every type of wave.
Director Jack McCoy said the movie told the story of surfing in a way that truly encapsulates its spirit and how the art of surf won hearts and continues to conquer the globe.
"It was a lot of fun to make. I think the result is pretty magical and… there's something in there for everyone," he said.
The film included recordings from underwater exposing the audience to surfing footage never seen before.
Mr McCoy was at Birch Carroll and Coyle Coolangatta to meet some of the audience at the film's premier in Coolangatta.
