Surfers tag in to tackle cancer
SOME of the best surfboard riders on the Gold Coast and Tweed will participate in the Sarcoma Tag Team event at Palm Beach on Sunday.
This year's big fundraiser is sponsored by Indonesian surfing resort, Pitstop Hill Mentawai, and all funds raised on the day will go to Hannah's Chance Foundation.
The charity was establish to raise funds for medical research into Sarcoma cancers, which are extremely aggressive forms of the disease, with 50% of sufferers failing to beat the odds.
One of those people who sadly succumbed to the disease was Hannah Ciobo, the daughter of Australian swimming great Tracey Wickham and Rob Ciobo.
Hannah and another Sarcoma victim, Tom O'Driscoll, wanted to raise awareness and funds to find a cure for their rare form of cancer.
Hannah fought the good fight for three years before losing her battle in October, 2007 - Tom, whom she married in a moving bedside ceremony only days before she died, suffered from Ewings Sarcoma and is now in remission.
Community support for the fourth annual Sarcoma Tag Team Event has been incredible.
Local surfing character, Terry "Tappa" Teece, will be the events master of ceremonies and he says the 2012 will be "bigger and better than ever".
"As well as spectators watching fantastic action out on the waves, there's also live entertainment, raffles, mouth-watering foods donated by Stagg chilli, San Diego Tortillas, Cheese Dip n Dots and Pacific Surf Life Saving Club members will be operating a barbeque throughout the day.
"The action starts at 7am with the first of the round-robin relay races and the final is scheduled for around 1pm.
"The format involves teams of six representing local clubs Alley, Burleigh, Kirra, MNM (Mermaid Beach/Nobby's/Miami), North End and Palm Beach," Tappa explained.
"The first surfer will race down the beach, paddle out and then catch a wave back in before racing up the beach and tagging the next surfer.
"We'll have round-robin events throughout the morning to eliminate two of the clubs, leaving four to contest the final.
"The action out on the water and on the beach will be fast and frenetic!"
