SurfStock on regardless of weather

A Blessing from surf god Huey is all that can be asked for this weekend’s festivities.

Kirra SurfStock director Andy McKinnon is hoping for a big swell but no rain this weekend as he vows the inaugural event will go ahead rain, hail or shine.

“It is all shaping up well; nothing is stopping us now,” Mr McKinnon said.

“The swell forecast is encouraging for Kirra today with south-easterly winds and a pumping south-easterly swell for tomorrow.

“I think Huey may be listening.”

The bureau of meteorology was yesterday predicting showers for today and tomorrow.

“I’m praying to Huey to bring the swell, but hold the rain,” Mr McKinnon said.

Coolangatta’s Joel Parkinson, who used to surf the iconic waves as a teenager, threw his support behind the Kirra cause yesterday.

He joined 90.9 Sea FM morning crew Paul, Moyra and Baggs outside Kirra Surf Life Saving Club yesterday for a live broadcast to discuss what Kirra Beach meant to him.

“I grew up in a house not too far from Kirra,” Mr Parkinson said on the radio.

“I can remember getting washed up on some rocks, so I would have to paddle out down near Bilinga. It’s good to see the rocks are coming back and the sand is shrinking up a bit.”

Parkinson and fellow local Mick Fanning are currently facing off in a battle for the Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship, which will be decided next month.

In line with SurfStock festivities, surfing legend Bob McTavish yesterday afternoon launched his new book Stoked! and signed autographs at the Kirra Surf Club.

Last night Kirra Surf Club also held the “Legends” Fundraiser for the Surfrider Foundation, which celebrated 25 years internationally.
