Suspicious discovery leads to evacuation

A NORTH Queensland police station was evacuated after staff discovered a suspicious canister on the nearby beach.

The Ayr police station was evacuated about 12.30pm (AEST) on Monday after officers discovered it "emitted a strong odour".

But the station was declared safe and no one was injured in the incident which is still under investigation.
