UPDATE, 3.30pm: A FAMILY was lucky to escape a fire at Ocean Shores which destroyed their home and one of their vehicles.

Elicia Maxwell and her three children Isabella, Bethany and Connor were alerted by a neighbourhood child knocking on their front door about 5pm yesterday their Yamble Drive house was on fire.

The three narrowly escaped with just a handful of belongings before the home was gutted.

Partner Tom Smith was seeking treatment for an injury to his leg he sustained working on the Tintenbar to Ewingsdale highway when he was alerted by friends and family that his house was alight.

He got home to fund it in ruins, including his beloved Nissan Skyline in the garage.

The house was being rented by the family and they did not have contents insurance. They are now staying with family.

Inspecting the damage today, NSW Fire & Rescue inspector Jeff Roche said they had not been able to identify the cause of the blaze which had started amid household items that had been placed in the yard for a garage sale.

POLICE are treating a fire that destroyed a house at Ocean Shores as suspicious.

The fire broke out at a Yamble Drive home shortly before 5pm yesterday afternoon.

It appeared the fire had started, or been started, among items put out the front of the house for a garage sale.

ABC Radio has reported the residents of the home, a woman and her three children, were alerted to the blaze when they smelled smoke.

"Despite efforts of herself and neighbours to try and put the fire out it quickly took hold and destroyed the house and the vehicles as well so that the poor buggers have lost the whole lot," Inspector Gary Cowan of Tweed/Byron police told ABC radio.

Insp Cowan said fire inspectors and detectives from Byron Bay were doing "a full examination of the scene to try and find out exactly what the cause of the fire was".

Anyone with information on the fire should visit the Crime Stoppers website or phone 1800 333 000.
