Sweet decision for mill
TWEED councillors have voted in secret to continue supplying the Condong Sugar Mill’s financially-embattled electricity generation project with water, despite it going into receivership.
Local canegrowers, who rely on the multi-million-dollar project to supply steam and power to the mill’s cane-crushing processes, have expressed their gratitude for the council support.
The councillors went into a closed-doors session after Tuesday’s open-council session to privately discuss an earlier agreement between the council and the two cogeneration plant joint venture part-ners – Delta Electricity and Sunshine Renewable Energy – to supply treated effluent from its Murwillumbah wastewater treatment plant.
They then unanimously voted to take a “wait-and-see approach and monitor the progress of the administration and receivership”.
