Grommets dominate Pro Junior

TWEED and Gold Coast grommets have dominated the opening three days of the Quiksilver Jetty Surf Pro Junior in Victoria.

Local heat winners included Cabarita’s Brent Savage, Coolangatta’s Blake Ainsworth and Jack Freestone, and Currumbin’s Mitch Crews, while Bilinga’s Eli Jacobs and Coolangatta brothers James and Thomas Woods all placed second in their four-surfer heats.

All will contest the third round today.

As well as rounds three and four of the Pro Junior Men’s division, this morning’s action will also feature the finals of the Pro Junior women’s event.

Flying the flag high for the Tweed Coast is Caba- rita’s Sarah Mason, whose gigantic upset on day two over No.1 seed Tyler Wright (Lennox Head) in round two provided the confidence and platform for a stellar run through the quarter finals.

In the quarters, Mason defeated older sister Aarini to advance through to this morning’s semi- final.

There the 14-year-old faces off against Sunshine Coaster Dimity Stoyle for a spot in the main event.

“I never think about who I’m surfing against in my heats, I simply go out and surf my best and try and win” Mason said.

“Tyler’s a great surfer, and now I’ve won the heat it gives me confidence to go a lot further and aim high at this event.”
