Synergies formed between council and Destination Tweed

TWEED Shire Council and Destination Tweed have put their heads together on an Economic Development Strategy to be known as Sustain Tweed.

In December last year, the council decided to investigate the preparation of an Economic Development Strategy.

Initial discussions with Destination Tweed indicated synergies should be achieved by both organisations by working in partnership in the preparation and delivery of an economic development strategy for the Tweed.

"This is an important first step in developing a long term strategic direction for economic development in the Tweed," Tweed mayor Barry Longland said.

"It is also a great opportunity for Tweed Shire Council and Destination Tweed to work together for the Tweed community.

"As a member of the steering committee I look forward to presenting this strategy to council and the board of Destination Tweed later this year."

Destination Tweed is engaged by the council to undertake attraction and promotion of the Tweed to new businesses.

Chair of Destination Tweed, Anne Duke, said Destination Tweed was enthusiastic about the focus the strategy would take.

"Not only will it cover the traditional Tweed industries you would expect to be included in the strategy, but we will also explore new and emerging opportunities for business," Ms Duke said.

"I believe this will make the strategy sustainable, particularly with respect to helping build and support intergenerational sustainability."
