Taking the time to revive
BRAD Bullock and Jasmin Hammant were only two hours into their journey to Sydney when they decided to "stop, revive, survive" at the Yelgun Driver Reviver.
The Logan Village couple, like many of their fellow travellers, are taking the "stop every two hours" advice to heart in a bid to ensure they arrive safely at their destinations.
When the Daily News visited the Yelgun Driver Reviver on Wednesday, the two volunteers manning the Brunswick-Mullumbimby Lions Club service van, Cheryl Nyland and Jan Blanch, were flat out distributing free cups of Bushells tea and biscuits to weary travellers intent on, well, reviving their spirits.
"The traffic was heavy on the drive down from Brisbane and through the Gold Coast and we both found it tiring so it was a welcome sight when we saw the Driver Reviver signs along the highway," Mr Bullock said.
"Just to get out, stretch the legs and have a cup of tea is just so revitalising!"
The Yelgun Driver Reviver is one of 80 across New South Wales where an army of volunteers work four-hourly shifts to do their bit in keeping drivers wide awake and alert on their journeys.
Many of those Driver Reviver depots along major thoroughfares such as Yelgun are open 24 hours-a-day, seven days a week throughout the summer vacation period.
"We do good business throughout the day and night," Mrs Nyland said.
"Jan and I came on for our shift about three hours ago and we have been virtually on the go ever since.
"It is an enjoyable experience for all of us working in the van - our patrons really appreciate the work we do and they are always friendly and grateful for the cuppa and their snack."
"And for us, it is heartening to know that we are sending them on their way, revived and ready to safely continue on their trips."
The majority of the volunteers at the Yelgun Driver Reviver are members of the Brunswick-Mullumbimby Lions Club - Mrs Nyland is the zone chairman and Mrs Blanch is a member of Brunswick Valley View Club.
Both ladies say they and their fellow volunteers and proud of their work in helping ensure travellers arrive safely at their destinations.
And the rest of us are proud of the volunteers for their contributions in helping keep down the number of accidents on roads across Australia.
