Taking three for a cleaner Tweed
NIPPERS, lifesavers, parents and the wider community gathered in Hastings Point on Thursday to do their bit for the environment.
The group of 21, taking part in the Take 3 For The Sea Program, which is dedicated to making beaches clean, went above and beyond for the Tweed community by picking up a mountain of plastics and rubbish.
Cabarita Surf Life Saving Club’s nippers secretary Belinda Pye said dedicated members of the group did the community proud.
“The kids ended up picking up 20 kilos of plastics and things that don’t need to be on the beach or an estuary,” Ms Pye said.
“For the kids to give up their school holiday time to come and help was great and they’ll all become great leaders within the community.”
The Take 3 initiative promotes taking three pieces of rubbish when leaving the beach or a waterway due to the disastrous impact debris and mainly plastics have on our oceans and marine life.
Cabarita SLSC was the first club on the far north coast of New South Wales to adopt Take 3 and have been working hard to grow the program within the Tweed community.
Pye said the program aimed to gather governmental support, with Thursday’s garbage collection crucial for garnering support.
“We were at Hastings for two hours, the clean up took 45 minutes and the rest of the time was spent itemising the rubbish and debris and data analysing the information,” Ms Pye said.
“We send that information to Take 3 in Sydney, who use it to rally parliament.”
Take 3 works hand in hand with the Tangaroa Blue Foundation - the Australian Marine Debris Initiative - to clean up our beaches.
