Tania Imagines a celeb encounter

KINGSCLIFF writer Tania Spiers-Phillips is no stranger to seeing her name in print.

But that hasn’t dimmed the journalist’s excitement at featuring in a new collaborative fan-fiction book to be launched next month.

“I've never been published in a book before,” she said. “It's been a long-held dream of mine.”

Ms Spiers-Phillips has been writing on the international online story publisher Wattpad for some time, but was thrilled to be invited to take part in the Imagines book with 32 other writers, just four of whom are Australian.

The stories revolve around an imagined chance encounter with a celebrity and are written in second person in a bid to deeply involve the reader in the story.

Ms Spiers-Phillips turned the project into a family affair. Her daughters, Erin and Inari, both had input into the story and helped with the dialogue.

“It was a project that we did over Christmas together,” she said.

But they all had to keep ‘mum’ until the book was officially announced earlier this month on Buzzfeed.

For her story, Out of the Blue, Tania chose as the star English actor Nicholas Hoult, from zombie drama Warm Bodies.

The protagonist runs into Hoult before taking him grocery shopping and home to dinner with her teenage daughters.

She said the tale was loosely set in her local town, although the Tweed Coast isn’t explicitly named.

“It’s sort of set here (in Kingscliff),” Ms Spiers-Phillips said.

While writing in such a way as to make the reader become the protagonist was a big change from her many years as a journalist, Ms Spiers-Phillips said she had enjoyed the experience.

“The Imagines project is lots of fun,” she said.

“Writing in second person was fun... it was a really nice challenge.”

She has been writing fiction for about 12 years, but predominantly for herself and a few friends, and embraced the opportunity to be involved with the Imagines project under the nom de plume Tango Walker.

“It’s nice to be a part of it along with 32 other writers,” she said.

Imagines: Celebrity Encounters Starring You is being published by Gallery Books and orders are being taken at Boardwalk Books in Kingscliff, with every possibility of a local signing.
