Tapping tweed's potential

THREE more speakers have been confirmed for Northern Rivers Tourism's inaugural Tourism Symposium.

Qantas chief economist Dr Tony Webber, Australian Tourism Export Council managing director Mathew Hingerty, and online marketing specialist Todd Wright will join keynote speaker Dick Porter, co-founder of STA Travel, at the October 19-20 conference, to be held at the Byron at Byron Resort at Byron Bay.

Head of Northern Rivers Tourism, Russell Mills, said the speakers would each bring a wealth of expertise to the symposium.

Dr Webber, who is a renowned aviation industry analyst, will share insights into the macro-economic forces driving the tourism and aviation industries in Australia and overseas, and how this bigger picture might impact on the region.

Mr Hingerty is an outspoken advocate for the potential of the health and wellbeing and medical tourism sectors and will speak about the Northern Rivers' untapped potential strengths in this growing niche tourism sector.

Mr Wright will share his expertise in the marketing communications field, revealing ways tourism operators can use new technology to expand their businesses.

Mr Mills said the inaugural two-day symposium would give tourism operators the opportunity to network, to hear about issues affecting their industry, and to learn practical skills to build their business.

The theme is 'Innovate and prosper' and Mr Mills said this reflected Northern Rivers Tourism's commitment to helping regional tourism businesses flourish in a volatile global environment.

“We want this to become a flagship event for the region,” he said.
