Taskforce nabs suspect
TASKFORCE Resolve made its first arrest in spectacular fashion yesterday after a high speed chase through the streets of Brisbane.
The serious-violence taskforce was formed on the Gold Coast and charged with investigating serious armed robberies that had spiked on the Gold Coast in recent months.
Tuesday's chase and subsequent arrest was made while detectives from the taskforce were doing follow-up investigations into an armed robbery at a Caltex service station at Worongary.
Graham Errol Hayes, 23, was arrested on Tuesday for the Caltex robbery after crashing a stolen car in Fortitude Valley during a police pursuit from Woolloongabba.
Acting Detective Superintendent Garry Watts said Hayes was armed with a replica handgun and took off in a stolen car with a woman and three-year-old girl aboard.
He said officers were wary of pursuing the vehicle because of traffic in the area and the risk of a city shoot-out but decided to proceed because Hayes was considered so dangerous.
“The arrest of a high-risk offender obviously has potential for injuries to ... members of the public and the person involved,” he said. Four police cars were damaged in the chase as well as several other cars.
Hayes was the first charged since Taskforce Resolve was set up last week. “This arrest is a significant achievement for the newly formed Taskforce Resolve,” Supt Watts said.
Hayes was charged with six offences from this alleged armed robbery.
He faced a further seven charges for the incidents in Woolloongabba and Fortitude Valley.
