Taxiride back on the road

IT'S been a long and winding road for Melbourne band Taxiride, who are back on track after a relative decade in the wilderness.

Bursting onto the scene in 1999, Taxiride dominated Australian radio for five years with their blend of rock and pop after entering the charts at number one with the critically acclaimed debut album Imaginate.

Imaginate featured four top 20 singles in Get Set, Everywhere You Go, Can You Feel and Nothing In This World, and prompted the to band embark on a rigorous touring schedule.

The line-up of Jason Singh, Tim Watson, Tim Wild and Dan Hall had the music world at its feet, with their follow-up album, Garage Mahal, spawning number one hit Creepin' Up Slowly, along with How I Got This Way and Afterglow.

But, after their meteoric rise, the band disappeared almost as fast, after internal turmoil between Singh and Watson tore the band apart.

"We spent a lot of our younger years working against each other and we had our heads butting together all the time,” Singh said.

"It came to a point where we didn't even see each other or talk.”

Singh said time passed by icily but, after having children changed his perspective on life, Singh realised the magic the pair had together and set about righting the ship after more than a decade of absence.

"For me, carrying that around for that long was too big a cross to bear and I really missed his voice and those harmonies,” he said.

"I sent (Watson) about 150 texts but wasn't getting anything back. I'm very persistent, so I mentioned it to our drummer Shaun and told him to call me.

"The phone rang and we sort of just let it all go. We got together for the first time in over a decade and thought 'what the hell were we thinking?'.

"It's been the best thing to bury the hatchet and make music together again.”

After their absence, Singh said he hoped the band still had a place in a much changed music landscape.

Taxiride play Twin Towns on September 3, as part of their eight-date national tour with the Badloves. Tickets from $37.
