Witnesses give 'traumatic' account of bonfire explosion

UPDATE: THE investigation which led to a 15-year-old boy being charged for horrific burns to teenagers Paris Turkington and Matthew Richards has been described by police as "complex and painstaking".

Officers today charged the Toowoomba boy with two counts of grievous bodily harm, some four-and-a-half months after flammable liquid was allegedly thrown on a backyard fire in Melody Dr, Harristown.

Toowoomba Child Protection Investigation Unit officer-in-charge Paul Hart said officers had taken multiple statements from people who were at the August 25 party.

"It is pretty fair to say that it has obviously been a complex and painstaking investigation," Detective Senior Sergeant Hart said.

"Some of those statements were quite traumatic."

He said reconstructions of the incident were conducted at the scene and medical and forensic evidence was gathered.

"We have looked at the fire pit and had some analysis done on that sort of stuff."

He said he understood why families of the victims wanted someone to be held accountable for the incident.

"It is fair to say that most of the people present at that party were known to each other.

"It is a reminder to people that even in a friendly environment that things can go wrong when there is alcohol involved and someone exercises poor judgement."

The charged teen is due to appear in Toowoomba Children's Court tomorrow.
