Teen heads to parliament

SHE may be only 16 years-old, but Poppi Meeves has her head firmly screwed on with a career in politics being mapped out on life's drawing board.

The Year 11 Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School student is gearing up to attend Parliament.

The Youth Parliament program gives young people a voice in the running of NSW.

It is a place where the opinions and concerns of young people in NSW are heard by those who have the power to make laws.

The program aims to promote youth-led advocacy, active community leadership and legal and parliamentary education.

"It's a real thrill to get the chance to interact with real politicians and to get involved in politics at such a high level," Ms Meeves told My Daily News.

With plans to study a double degree in law and political science, she didn't discover her passion for politics until recently.

"I always had the head and the voice for public speaking," she said.

This became apparent when she hosted a "girls can do anything" forum as a kid.

"I love public speaking," she said.

"I have always been an advocate for sustainability and the environment.

"Youth Parliament is a way for young people to get involved in future decisions.

"It's also a way to meet kindred spirits and swap notes on our thoughts."

Ms Meeves will attend a Youth Parliament training camp in April at Sydney with a residential camp planned for July.

"It's definitely one of the highlights of the year," she said.

"I'm really looking forward to meeting my peers and having an incredible experience."
