Teens face charges over Ballina police pursuit

A GROUP of teens were due to face court over the weekend after a dangerous police pursuit through Ballina on Friday.

Shortly after 11pm on Friday, NSW Police were advised by their colleagues in Queensland POLAIR that a stolen vehicle they were monitoring was approaching the border.

Several vehicles were positioned to stop the Holden Captiva however it was estimated to be travelling south at 180km/h in the 100km/h zone and, due to safety concerns, the pursuit was called off.

Police monitored the vehicle and re-engaged the pursuit near Ewingsdale Rd at Byron Bay. Other officers were able to deploy a tyre deflation device which punctured the Holden's front tyre.

When the vehicle crossed to the wrong side of the Pacific Hwy the pursuit was again terminated.

The vehicle eventually stopped on Tamarind Dr at Ballina where three occupants left the vehicle and hid in bushland.

After a lengthy search of the area, a 15-year-old male and two females, aged 16 and 18, were arrested with the assistance of the Qld Polair, officers from the Tweed Byron and Richmond LACs, alongside Byron's dog squad officer, Senior Constable Barrenger and police dog Granite.

The teenagers were taken to Ballina Police Station where the boy was later charged with failing to stop in a police pursuit, driving dangerously, drive conveyance without consent of owner, driver never licensed and receipt of property stolen outside NSW.

Both females were charged with being carried in conveyance. All were refused bail, with the juveniles to appear at a Children's Court and the woman to appear at Ballina Bail Court on Saturday.
