Teens storm Qld titles

TWEED Heads & Coolangatta Rowing Club enjoyed a successful Queensland State Titles last weekend in Bundaberg at the Bucca Weir rowing course.

Under head coach Garry Annand, the nine club competitors were led by 14-year-old Aleesha Lenehan, who won gold in the girls' U15 single scull. She also teamed up with 14-year-old Leilani Stacey to win gold in the girls' U15 double scull. She then rowed with 15-year-old Monique Bitzios to take the bronze medal in the girls' Group 4 double scull beating much older competition.

Leilani Stacey also picked up the bronze medal in the girls' U15 single scull.

Max Annand, 21, picked up a silver medal in the group 2 single scull. Max then teamed up with Ben Hall, 18, to take the silver medal in the group 2 double scull.

Ben, who was favourite for the group 4 single scull, dropped his oar not far from the start, regained it and then made a great effort to get back into 4th place, only inches from 3rd.

He also then placed 4th in the group 2 single scull, being beaten by only a bow ball.

"It's a great result for the club in very hot 40-degree conditions," Mr Annand said.

"I will be taking some of my rowers to compete at the NSW State titles 13-14 February and then on to the Australian titles in late March."

Both regattas are being held at Penrith.
