Telstra’s hoax bill warning
TELSTRA has warned residents to be wary of hoax emails imitating utility services and high profile brands.
Telstra Country Wide Sunshine and Central Coast area manager Kris Carver said scammers were creating online bills which looked like the real thing to swindle customers of their money.
"As people are increasingly managing their household bills online, scammers are catching up with this trend by creating increasingly sophisticated bills that may look the same as those issued by utility companies but are in fact scams," he said.
Mr Carver said the scam emails requested customers enter personal information into a malicious website.
He urged customers to carefully check the account number on all utility bills to ensure they were authentic.
"These emails are becoming more realistic and are being sent from legitimate email addresses customers may recognise," he said.
Mr Carver said any customers unsure about a bill purporting to be from Telstra should log on to My Account at Telstra.com and make the sure information, including the account number, matched, or take the bill into a Telstra store.
What to do if you suspect you have received a hoax email:
- Do not reply to it.
- Do not open any attachment or click on any links in it.
- Delete it.
- Instead of clicking on a link you are unsure about, type the internet address (URL) into your browser rather than clicking on it.
- Never respond to requests for personal information in an unsolicited email or a pop-up window.
- Use a spam filter to block unsolicited and unwanted email.
- Report email scams to https://service.telstra.com.au/customer/general/surveys/Report misuse of service.
