Terranora post office reopens

THE heart, and a little piece of history, has returned to Terranora after the reopening of the general store’s post office.

General store owner Heather Goodall said the store, which reopened in February, was important to the community.

The post office returned under the general store’s roof last month.

“It’s the heritage of the place,” Ms Goodall said.

“The biggest kick I get is when people around their 40s come in and say they used to come to the store to buy lollies when they were kids back when Terranora Road was a dirt road.”

Ms Goodall had to do significant renovation to the property when it fell into ruin after it closed its doors about 18 months ago.

The residents drove past the property daily watching a piece of history fall into disrepair.

The post office was first opened in 1914, and was moved to its current location about 75 years ago.

It returned last month after a time in the newsagency at the town’s shopping centre.

Residents of Terranora were yesterday thrilled to have their post office back in the general store.

Fred and Veronica Leslie have lived in the town for 37 years and have seen the ups and downs of the community in that time.

The reopening of the general store was a significant boost to a town in which numerous businesses have closed in the past months.

“If you lost a dog then the first place you went was the store,” Mrs Leslie said.

“As you can see from the notice board, this is where people came together.”

Mr Leslie said the town missed the general store.

“This definitely brings the community together,” he said.

“It’s also the personality of the people here.

“When you come down here it’s as though you are coming home rather than a shop.”
