Terrorism attack warning in South Africa

FOR the second time in less than a year the US State Department has warned American citizens in South Africa of the imminent threat of terrorist attacks.

The US Diplomatic Mission to South Africa said information had been received that terrorist groups were planning to carry out "near-term attacks" in places where US citizens congregate in South Africa, such as upscale shopping areas and malls in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

"This information comes against the backdrop of the Islamic State ... call for its adherents to carry out terrorist attacks globally during the upcoming month of Ramadan," the Mission said.

The State Department has similar warnings in place for US citizens living or travelling in Europe.Particular mention is made of the Euro 2016 football tournament - which starts on Saturday and finishes on July 10 - the Tour de France (July 2-24) and the Catholic Church's World Youth Day event in Krakow, Poland (July 26-31).

"Euro Cup stadiums, fan zones and unaffiliated entertainment venues broadcasting the tournaments in France and across Europe represent potential targets for terrorists, as do other large-scale sporting events and public gathering places throughout Europe," the State Department warns.
