The 2013 world title race is on for young and old surfers
Led by old baldy umm, The King sounds better, Kelly Slater holds the narrowest of leads, at only 50 points in front of Taj Burrow and Mick Fanning, who are tied on equal points in second with Adriano De Souza coming up the rear in 4th, and Joel Parkinson and Nat Young tied in equal 5th.
This is anyone's game going into Brazil for the third ASP World Tour Title event, of the 10 events, to decide this year's World Title.
After the first event, won by Kelly Slater at Kirra Point, the 11 times world champ said he was fully committed to this year's world tour, something that he hadn't said for the last five years. However, his equal 13th blowout at Bells, and a bad back, had Slater less than enthusiastic about the next whistle stop in Brazil in May.
Occy tried to pry a commitment from Kelly during a cup of coffee after his loss at Bells and the King wouldn't commit.
This time last year Kelly opted out of Brazil because of an injury to his foot, despite being seen charging a pumping Burleigh Point.
He said he didn't want to aggravate the injury by going hard doing aerials in the Brazil beach breaks, but was that really the reason for opting out of Brazil?
By not going, Kelly registered a 25th place and this hung like an albatross around his neck and in the end cost him the 2012 World title.
But there was also that rumour that Kelly had peeved off the Brazilians by his treatment of touting Adriano and that the army of Brazilians fans, incredibly loyal to their own, were vying for Slaters blood in Rio and wanted an all-out showdown.
Ironically, it was in Brazil that Slater regained his World Title supremacy by winning back the World Title in 2005. However in the wake of Adriano's win at Bells, you could fairly say that Brazil will only be cheering their number one hopeful and the dream that one of theirs will become the first ASP World Champion. A win on home turf for Adriano would see 'mineirinho' (his nickname for small guy in Portuguese) take the World ratings lead!
