The banana brothers
EUNGELLA brothers Andy and Will Everest have grown bananas fit for a king and queen.
The siblings took the 2011 Tweed Valley Banana Festival King and Queen banana titles in Murwillumbah yesterday for having the largest bananas in the competition.
Will took his second queen title with a 315-gram lady finger, while Andy took the king's throne for the fourth time with a 320g cavendish.
Tweed Brunswick Banana Association president Robert Pierce said he was encouraged by the quality of the fruit entered.
“It's been a pretty good crop because we've had a good early season,” Mr Pierce said.
“It's getting dry again now.” Andy said he and his brother shared a healthy competitiveness when it came to growing bananas.
“We compete in the Brisbane show too and the Murwillumbah show,” Mr Everest said.
“He's got his own patch and I've got mine.”
He said the adjacent farms were blessed with fertile soil ideal for farming.
“To grow good bananas is one thing, but to have good soil is another,” he said. “That's the trick.”
The third-generation banana farmers each won $100.
Former deputy prime minister and Banana Festival veteran Doug Anthony attended the ceremony to present the prizes.
“I've never been in the banana industry where things have looked so prosperous,” Mr Anthony said.
