THE federal seat of Richmond used to be a bastion of political conservatism held as it was by the Country/National Party from 1922 to 1990, including most notably three generations of the Anthony family.

But the 2768sq km seat, which spans the northeast of NSW including Tweed Heads through to Ballina, Nimbin and rural parts of Lismore City Council, in the past three decades has become increasingly urbanised and coastal resulting in a shift to Labor in recent years.

The main electorate centres include Tweed Heads, Kingscliff, Murwillumbah, Bangalow, Brunswick Heads, Byron Bay, Lennox Head, Mullumbimby, Nimbin, Ocean Shores, Pottsville and Suffolk Park.

The electorate since 2004 has been held by the ALP's Justine Elliot, a former police officer. At the 2010 federal poll, Elliot won a majority in all five areas, from 53.2% in Tweed Heads to 66.5% in Byron.

New arrivals to the seat have included a large contingent of low-income retirees looking to soak up the sun and relaxed beach lifestyle in their golden years, and it has among the highest numbers of caravan residents in the country. There's also a significant population of alternative lifestylers.

The Greens vote was 9.4% in Tweed Heads and 29.8% in Lismore.

Elliot enjoys a 7% margin, which is considered safe, but some political commentators are predicting a swing to the Coalition at next month's poll.

The seat has a population of 134,000 with a median age of 44 and average weekly earnings of $848.

Work-wise nearly 20% of residents are professionals, technicians and trades workers 15%, managers 13%, clerical and administrative workers 12%, and community and personal service workers 12%.

Major industries include tourism, commercial fishing and a range of agriculture comprising tropical fruits, dairy, beef cattle, sugarcane, coffee, macadamia nuts, sugar processing, timber, light engineering, boat building and cottage industries.
