The fallout from the sacking of the Tweed Shire GM
A TWEED business group is seeking an urgent meeting with the Tweed Mayor Barry Longland to discuss the sacking of the council's general manager. The Combined Chamber of Commerce which includes Tweed, Kingslciff and Murwillumbah's chambers of commerce have written to the mayor requestioning the meeting.
The chamber is the latest group to publicly condemn the sacking. It is also considering writing to the Minister for Local Government Don Page asking for him to intervene and to dismiss the council.
This comes after a prominent Murwillumbah business leader called on the councillors to be accountable.
Right Food Group founder Anni Brownjohn said she was concerned at the council's decision to sack its general manager David Keenan.
"There is total dysfunction in the council," Ms Brownjohn said.
"To sack a general manager who had a clear vision and a clear economic plan was beyond belief."
The council sacked Mr Keenan during Thursday night's council meeting and appointed Troy Green acting general manager on Friday.
"If I picked the wrong staff than that would be on me," Ms Brownjohn said.
"They (councillors) picked him (Mr Keenan). When you have to sack someone who you appointed in less than a year then you have to have a look at your own decisions."
Tweed mayor Barry Longland said on Friday that he was 'disappointed' with the business community's criticism of the GM's contract termination.
"I think it's unwarranted," Cr Longland said.
"We have an economic development officer. We have a joint project with Destination Tweed that's going on right now to develop an economic development strategy and that is going to be the guiding light."
When Mr Keenan was appointed in April last year his experience in economic development was championed.
"This is not an issue about Mr Keenan's qualifications, which are quite impressive."
