'The Fonz' has got the touch

IT'S happy days for the Tweed's Alphonsus 'The Fonz' Frank, whose cool touch secured him a spot in the NSW Combined Independent Schools (CIS) under-15 touch football side.

Five students from Pacific Coast Christian School represented the region at the NSW Christian Secondary Schools Association (CSSA) Touch carnival in April, but it was 15-year old Alphonsus and 14-year-old Zac Caitlin, who were chosen to represent the CSSA side at the next level.

The pair, who both play link, travelled with the rest of the side to Sydney to contest the NSW CIS Touch Gala Day on May 6. And it was there Alphonsus proved to be in a league of his own.

His decisive play throughout the group stages ensured his team a grand final berth. And although they lost by a try in the epic final encounter, Alphonsus' stand-out performances were what the selectors were looking for.

“He is one of those guys who has got amazing natural ability and flare,” PCCS sports co-ordinator Phil Gallagher said.

“He has excellent ball-handling skills and can read play particularly well.

“He is a fairly reserved young guy, but as a small community school we are really proud to have someone achieve like he has.”

Alphonsus will return to Sydney on July 31 to attend a two-day camp at the Academy of Sport in Narrabeen ahead of the 2009 All Schools Championships.
