The man who will be mayor decided at council tonight
COUNCILLOR Warren Polglase has hinted he'll be contesting the Tweed Shire mayoralty tonight.
In arguably the most important night of the year for the council, the seven councillors will vote to determine who will serve as mayor for the next 12 months.
When the mayor is not popularly elected, councillors have to vote on the position annually.
Current mayor Barry Longland has already indicated he will be standing again.
The position of deputy mayor, currently held by Cr Michael Armstrong, will also be decided tonight.
Cr Polglase, who has already served five terms as mayor, said this week that he hadn't yet decided.
But he added: "I always believe there should be a contest... and I could be one of the contestants."
Thanks to Cr Katie Milne, fluoride which has been in the local water supply since the early 1970s, will also be a subject of debate - again.
The issue was also raised back in the 1980s by a previous council and has also been a contentious one for neighbouring councils Byron , Ballina and Lismore in recent times.
The meeting, staged at the Murwillumbah Cultural and Civic Centre, kicks
off at 4.45pm with the mayoralty vote the first call of business.
