ANZAC Day Kingscliff

The march goes on to remember the fallen

FOR the first time in many years Joseph Peoples did not lead the Anzac Day march at Kingscliff this morning.

The 88-year-old WWII veteran passed away in August last year.

But the memory of the man who signed up to serve his country at just 17-years-old, and who saw conflict in the waters of New Guinea while serving in the Australian Royal Navy, lives on.

Today his granddaughters, Caitlin Martin, 22, and Emily Martin, 25, were at the Kingscliff service to remember the sacfrices their grandfather and other servicemen and women made.

"We wouldn't have what we have if it wasn't for them," Emily said.

"We would take for granted our freedom and our beautiful country."

The young women were handing out sprigs of rosemary to those in attendance.

The herb was for remembering, Emily said.

The march and service was well attended with representatives from Bogangar, Cudgen and Kingscliff public schools and St Anthony's Catholic Primary School showing their support.
