There can only be one: sudden death in the Quiksilver Pro
IT'S turning into the most anticipated clash of the Quiksilver Pro and it's only round two.
World Champion Joel Parkinson has drawn wildcard trials winner Brent Dorrington, after both failed to win their opening round heat where only the winner advances into round three.
Now it's onto the sudden death heat in round two where the winner advances into round 3 and the loser is eliminated from the competition.
There is a lot riding on this very special match up from the two Coolangatta surfers, although that's the only common ground belying the intense rivalry.
Parko is in the Snapper Rocks Surfriders Club, while Brenno a former Snapper member, is now in the D'Bah boardriders who recently defeated Snapper in the Kirra Teams and State Surf Tag.
And Brenno has been a prominent member of the new club tour-de-force in Coolangatta.
This is shaping up as a Snapper versus D'Bah duel, a David and Goliath duel, the world champ against the mighty midget and the Coolangatta supporters are split down the middle.
Any other heat the locals would be 100% with Joel, but this one is totally different and of course the Parko troops are rallying.
Across from the Rainbow Bay surf club, you can see the unofficial D'bah headquarters, a tinnie parked out the front with 'animal' written in dark black letters.
The Mad Hueys, a new Gold Coast surfing label, is fronted by the Harrington twins Dean and Shaun, former Snapper members now in the D'Bah club.
They call themselves the DBots and are seen visibly pumping up the atmosphere for anyone that dares to walk by.
Better known as the Hazza's they are hugely supportive of the Brenno campaign with a 'Go Brenno' banner draped across the front of the building.
This is Brenno's first ASP World Tour event and he has never surfed against Parko in this way.
Turning 26 only last week, Brenno just scrapped into the trials by placing second to Samba Mann, another D'bah member in last year pre-trials.
If Brenno can beat Parko it will be the upset of the event and the little fella thinks he can.
"Yeah I reckon I can (cause an upset)," he said.
"If I can get the right waves I can. I'm pretty confident. I just want to wait for the best waves and do my thing."
I asked Brenno if he had anything to say to Parko?
Ever the sportsman and all round nice guy he said "Naw, Parko's a legend"
"We both get along, but I'm ready for the heat for sure."
Organisers are looking at running the Roxy Pro women's event tomorrow, with semis and finals more than likely at Rainbow Bay. Defending champ and 5 times World women's champ Stephanie Gilmore faces Tyler Wright of Lennox Head, while world number two Sally Fitzgibbons is up against World number three and 2011 world Champion Carissa Moore of Hawaii.
The men's competition will be run from Sunday until Tuesday and with tropical cyclone Sandra intensifying out to sea we can probably expect some serious waves at Kirra Point to wrap up the Quiksilver Pro.
