There is no need to wait for year's end to start studying

WE'RE almost halfway through the year - another week or so and we'll be counting down the days to 2014.

That doesn't mean though that you need to wait for the count to hit zero before taking steps to revitalise your career.

If you are considering a return to study there's no need to wait for the start of the year - most universities and TAFEs offer mid-year commencement in many (if not most) of their programs.

You'll give yourself a six-month head start on achieving your career goals, and save yourself half a year of procrastination and indecision. If you're ready for a change, don't wait to take the first step, get up and moving as soon as possible.

Choosing study doesn't mean you've chosen a full-time, life-consuming commitment either - part-time and flexible enrollment options mean you can study at your own pace, in your own time.

My darling wife is about to start doing exactly that. She's taken time away from work to look after our two young boys, but is also looking ahead to a return to work.

She's about to start studying to work as a teacher's aide - she made the decision that this is where her post-maternity leave career should head, and enrolled to start mid-year, and will do so part-time and self-paced, as much at least as the kids allow.

She's chosen a career path that is not only one that interests her and that she has a natural aptitude for, but also one that will fit with our home life - working school hours when the boys are school-aged will be perfect.

She's not waiting till the start of a new year, she's making changes now. It's one more thing to juggle at home, but as anyone with young children will attest, you quickly become pretty talented at keeping multiple balls in the air.

The whole concept of a two semester year, as far as TAFEs and universities are concerned, is becoming a bit of a relic - institutions are a lot more flexible with admission periods and start dates, due both to increased competition in the sector and the changing demands of their prospective students.

Institutions are making it easier than ever to study when and where suits you best, so why not take advantage and push your career forward, or in an entirely different direction?
