Dalai Lama: there's no need for 'stupid' successor

THE Dalai Lama has revealed in an interview he would rather be the last one than be replaced by someone "stupid".

The exiled Tibetan spiritual leader told the BBC that the Dalai Lama, as a man-made institution, would cease one day. He said the Tibetan people should choose their next leader.

"There is no guarantee that some stupid Dalai Lama won't come next, who will disgrace himself or herself," he said.

"That would be very sad."

Chinese authorities have stated the tradition must continue and they must choose the next Dalai Lama.
