Thief removes safe with trolley

POLICE believe a thief used a shopping trolley to steal a safe from a coffee shop in Tweed Heads.

The break-and-enter took place about 4am yesterday at Centro Tweed Shopping Centre and police are appealing for public assistance.

Tweed-Byron Crime Manager Detective Inspector Shane Diehm said investigators believed a man acted alone and broke in through the front door of the shop. Inside the shop he took a safe and its contents.

“The man has been described as wearing long, dark pants, white runners and a black beanie,” Det Insp Diehm said. “What is really distinctive about this crime is that we believe the man used a shopping trolley to move the safe, last seen heading towards Francis St.”

Det Insp Diehm said this would have been a reasonably unusual sight.

“I encourage anyone with information to contact Tweed Heads Police on 07 5536 0999 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
