Thieves take 2400 oysters

MORE than 2400 oysters valued at $2000 have been stolen from several leases in the Terranora Broadwater.

Tweed Heads Police are now investigating the incident, which occurred sometime between Friday, September 17 and Monday, September 19.

It is believed an unknown number of people accessed the oyster leases by using a vessel at night.

The theft follows a much larger haul back in April, when $50,000 worth of oysters were stolen.

Terranora Lake Oysters owner Cliff Verdich said the recently stolen oysters had been about to go on sale.

“They picked the good ones,” Mr Verdich said.

“I’ve started coming down at night at low tide to see what is going on out there.

“Someone is doing it, so someone has to be caught.”

Investigators are following leads to see if the incidents are linked.

Police are now seeking the assistance of anyone who may have seen vessels or people acting suspiciously in the vicinity of the leases in hopes of tracking down those involved.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Tweed Heads Police Station on (07) 5536 0999 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
