Thrillseekers risk their lives on Clarrie Hall Dam spillway

A GROUP of thrill-seeking, law-breaking teens have risked their lives at Clarrie Hall Dam.

A video showing a number of teens abusing the green algae-infested spillway for a thrill ride on their boogie boards was uploaded to YouTube in late February. It shows the teens jumping from the wall of the dam with their boards and quickly sliding down before stopping just short of dangerous rocks.

Tweed Shire Council manager water Anthony Burnham said the council took no re- sponsibility for the practice and wants it to stop before someone is killed or hurt.

"The people who are doing this are putting their lives and others at risk," he said.

"This is an illegal practice which is clearly banned by the sign- age at a number of points around the dam."

Mr Burnham said the council could not totally prevent access as there were many approaches to the spillway, including from the water after swimming through the dam.

"However, there are clear danger warning signs at each point and in the park area below," Mr Burnham said. "Council has recently installed additional barbed wire as a further deterrent."

Tweed-Byron Local Area Command crime manager Inspector Brendon Cullen said the teens were engaging in extremely dangerous and risky behaviour.

"It could end in tra- gedy," he said. "There are council regulations and by laws which prohibit people from getting in there which can result in monetary fines."

Public access to the site was blocked on Tuesday for an upgrade to the spillway. The site will reopen in May 2014.
