Joel Tilley surfs to victory at Evans Head Malibu Classic

GOLD Coast surfer Joel Tilley won the open nine foot division at the Evans Head Malibu Classic.

Tilley took out one of the most hotly contested finals in the history of the 25-year event.

About 120 longboarders from Victoria to the Sunshine Coast competed this year.

Lennox Head surfer Scott Channon finished fifth in the open section and won the over-30s men's division.

The open women's division was won by Byron Bay's Isabelle Braly, who had not long returned to competition after the birth of her first child 12 months ago.

Coffs Harbour's Brett Caller was a crowd favourite and took out the old mal division.

Jye Whyatt won the junior boys division.

As well as top-class surfing, the Classic offered live music and barbecues, as well as a beachside market.

The old mal and retros shortboard divisions featured a variety of nostalgic boards and as always were popular with spectators.

Money raised during the event will go towards local charities including the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service and Cancer Council.
