Time capsule unlocked
TWEED River High School students have unlocked secrets from the past after uncovering a time capsule which has been buried for 25 years.
The time capsule was opened as part of the school’s 50th anniversary celebrations this month.
Now that items from the capsule have been retrieved, staff at Tweed River High School are carrying out the instructions inscribed on the contents so many years ago.
Tweed River High School library administration officer Cris James said the time capsule contents were now being handed out to the family members of the people who participated in the historical activity.
“Items that were stipulated by people to go to family members are now available for collection,” Ms James said.
“The time capsule was buried in 1986 and many of the contents are inscribed with instructions that they are to be left to children, grandchildren or next of kin.
“Most of the people who put items in the time capsule were prominent members of the school or Tweed community.”
Ms James said the time capsule was filled with a wealth of memories that the students and families are now enjoying.
“There was lots of memorabilia in there, things like newspaper clippings from that day,” she said.
“We only opened the items that were due to come out after 25 years. Some people opted to have there items removed from the time capsule after 50 years, so we will have to wait a bit longer to see them.
“Students of all ages were amazed by the opening of the time capsule. They were surprised there was no technology in there. It shows what a difference time makes.
“The opening of the capsule was a big thing.”
Ms James said the time capsule held up very well over the years and was constructed by Arco Aluminium in Tweed Heads and will be opened again 25 years from now.
