Change smoke alarm batteries

TWEED firefighters are urging people to use the end of daylight saving as a reminder to check their smoke alarms.

“When you change your clocks on Sunday, just take a few minutes to test your smoke alarms and change the batteries,” Tweed Heads station officer Chris Perrin said.

“Working smoke alarms and a home-escape plan could save you, your family, pets and possessions in a fire.

“A fire can spread and engulf a home in just a few minutes.”

Mr Perrin also reminded residents it was required by law to have at least one working smoke alarm per floor, including in caravans, campervans and movable dwellings.

“Having a smoke alarm that is not working or has a flat battery is just as bad as not having one at all.

“Don’t gamble with your family’s life by waiting to install them – do it now.”
