Tips to save money while petrol prices are high

THE price of fuel on the Tweed is sitting at between $1.50 and $1.56 per litre and it appears to be here to stay.

So, here are some simple fuel saving tips:

  • When sitting at traffic lights put your car in neutral or park.
  • When filling the car up, keep the hose in the tank until the pump shuts off completely. As much as half a cup can still be in the hose.
  • Settle your kids and make all car adjustments before you start the car. Avoiding idling for excessive periods of time.
  • Wherever possible take public transport or car pool to your destination.
  • Always try to accelerate gradually.
  • Clogged air filters increase fuel consumption by restricting airflow to the engine and should be cleaned/replaced when necessary.Clogged air filters can increase fuel consumption by up to 10%.
  • Keep your tyre pressure at recommended manufacturer levels. Keeping your tyres inflated is one of the easiest and most significant ways to save fuel.
  • Air conditioners can use about 10 per cent extra fuel when operating. Wind down the windows at slower speeds.
  • Poor alignment not only causes tires to wear out more quickly, but also forces your engine to work harder. Align your tires, and save up to 10% on fuel.
  • Fuel consumption increases significantly over about 90 km/h. At 110 km/h your car uses up to 25 per cent more fuel than it would cruising at 90 km/h.
