Toddler run over in fatal driveway accident at Ripley

A 15-MONTH-old boy has died after he was run over in the driveway of the home he shared with his grandmother in Ripley.

Police said a car visiting the home in Clarke St Ripley reversed out of the driveway and over the toddler about 1pm yesterday.

QAS paramedics tried to revive the boy but he could not be saved. The driver was taken to hospital with shock.

About two hours after the incident, a blonde woman arrived in a ute with a man. She was distraught at hearing the news, shaking with shock and screaming in disbelief. Neighbours stood on surrounding footpaths.

Inspector Dave Preston said the car that reversed over the boy belonged to a government department, although he would not reveal which department the vehicle was from.

He said the tragedy was traumatic for all involved, especially the boy's family.

"As you can imagine, they're all very distraught by the whole situation. Our condolences go out to the family," he said.

"We're just trying to work out how this tragic event has unfolded. Of course a number of police and ambulance officers arrived and attending such a scene is a horrific situation for them to come across."

The Forensic Crash Unit and CIB are investigating.
