Ton of courage

FLYER Nat Barnes joins an exclusive club by notching his 100th game for the Tweed Heads Seagulls tomorrow against the Ipswich Jets.

Just five players have run out in the black and white-striped jersey as many times as Barnes has, and four of them will run out with him at Piggabeen Sports ground when the club takes on Ipswich tomorrow from 3.30pm.

James Wood is the most experienced Seagull, with 129 caps, followed by Tim Maccan (127), Brad Davis (119), Selasi Berdie (118) and Matt King (106 plus 41 for Souths Logan).

Wood was cleared of a striking charge at the judiciary on Thursday night, which allows him to line up in the centres, while Davis is at halfback, Berdie in the back row and King at five-eighth.

Maccan is on standby for any injuries to key players.

Barnes is in fine form this year and has returned from a two-year Sydney sabbatical to score 11 tries in eight games.

“It's pretty cool,” Barnes said this week when asked about the milestone.

“Coming back this year, the place has changed a little bit, but there is still this core group of guys here still.

“It's really fun to be back here playing football with them.”

The Seagulls are unbeaten this year and there is no doubt the return of both Barnes and King has played a big part in the success.

“It takes about five seasons to get two 100 games, so with this group of guys having five seasons together, there is no doubt it is going to help,” Tim Maccan told the Daily News.

It has enabled them to build combinations and a close bond.

“We are all mates, and playing with this bunch of blokes is the best thing about running out each week,” Davis added.

The Seagulls are expecting a tough game tomorrow against an Ipswich Jets side that is big and strong right across the park.

Coach Ben Anderson said his team would have faith in their normal game plan and wouldn't be changing anything ahead of the clash.
