Top greyhounds chase share of prizemoney

ONE of the fastest dogs in the nation will line up at Border Park Raceway tomorrow in a bid to seal a place on the card for the final race day at the venue.

The Tweed Heads track will host its final race meeting next Saturday with a bumper 10-race program offering more than $40,000 in prizemoney.

Those seeking a slice of the cash pie will turn out at the track today for the qualifying heats.

Border Park Raceway secretary Stephen McGrath said the event had attracted plenty of attention with trainers from across northern NSW and south- east Queensland keen to take part.

"For the race meeting we had more than 160 noms for the 100 spots,” McGrath said.

"The best of the best is here and they have to qualify to go through to the final day,” he said.

Among those to appear is the Jeff Crawford-trained Leeroy Rogue which will likely start favourite in the sixth event on the card.

The son of Big Daddy Cool and Fantasy Royale is in impressive form having clocked a track record 19.22 seconds for the 366m straight-track journey at Capalaba.

"That is rocket time,” McGrath said.

"It's won eight out 19 and six places,” he said.

"It's trialled pretty bloody quick here too, just quietly.”

Today's non-TAB race meeting is the beginning of the end for racing at Border Park with the facility having sold for $16.5million.

McGrath said it was hoped that the money from the sale would be used to establish a multi-use facility that would also cater for greyhound racing.

The first event on tomorrow's 10-race program will start at 1.15pm. There will be free admission to the event.
