Top showing earns teen a spot on Aussie volleyball team

COAST 16-year-old Daniel Campbell has taken the first steps toward his Olympic dream following his selection in the under-19 Australian Volleyball team.

Daniel won Australian selection following a stunning display at the under-19 trans-Tasman championship on the Gold Coast last week while representing Queensland.

One of only two Year 11 students in the team, Daniel starred for Queensland to lead it to the competition final against New Zealand's North Island.

Named the best player of the tournament, Daniel's mother Mandy said her son was a standout.

"His good play was so obvious that we had rival coaches and players coming up to us to congratulate him on how well was playing," she said.

Daniel made his national debut on the last day of competition with the best players from Australia and New Zealand selected from the championship playing group.

Rallying hard throughout the final, Australia went down to New Zealand in a nail-biting five setter.

"He's also and straight-A student, so he's got the brains too," Mandy said.
