Tough test for Vixens’ title hopes

NETBALL: The Melbourne Vixens are determined to show their ANZ Championship title credentials when they travel to Invercargill to play the Southern Steel tomorrow.

With the Vixens (7-4) sitting third on the Australian table behind the NSW Swift (9-2) and the Queensland Firebirds (9-2), they want a confidence-boosting win over the New Zealand conference leaders.

Heading into the penultimate round, the Steel is unbeaten and have the firepower of shooter Jhaniele Fowler-Reid up front.

“Obviously it’s the end of the season soon and that’s when we want to be at our best. I think we will be a bit of a dark horse and hopefully we get there,” Vixens centre Liz Watson told media yesterday.

“I think it’s a lot more than a Swifts-Firebirds competition at the moment.”

The top three teams from each conference progress to the finals.

Fourth-placed West Coast Fever (6-5) hosts New Zealand’s Central Pulse tomorrow, while the Adelaide Thunderbirds host the Mainland Tactix and the Northern Mystics host the Swifts on Sunday. The Firebirds are away to the Magic on Monday.
