New Toyota Corolla to be bigger with premium styling

THE new Toyota Corolla sedan will boast premium styling and more room for rear seat passengers when it is launched in Australia early next year.

Toyota has revealed first images of the new model during coinciding launches in Istanbul and California, where the respective European and US-spec iterations were unveiled to the motoring press.

On top of styling changes, including more chrome exterior highlights and a swoopy stance, Toyota claims to have increased interior space and reduced cabin noise. The Japanese manufacturer has also given its best-seller a more commanding driving position.

The Aussie-bound Corolla sedan will share stronger parallels with the European version more so than the American model, Toyota Australia spokesman Mike Breen said. The two cars retain key styling cues from the Corolla Furia concept car shown at Detroit Motor Show in January.

Toyota hasn't yet confirmed what engines the Corolla will come equipped with, but it's safe to assume the booted version will share the same 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine as its hatched sibling.

The revised engine produces 103kW and 173Nm of torque, and is mated to a CVT transmission with a seven pre-programmed gears when used in manual mode.

The 11th-generation Corolla will be built in 16 locations and sold in more than 150 countries worldwide.

The sedan reveal comes after the Corolla hatch took over the mantle of Australia's most popular car, ousting the soon-to-be replaced Mazda3 according to sales data released to end the May.
