Traffic chaos on Pacific Hwy

WET weather overnight caused chaos on the Pacific Highway at Tweed Heads South this morning.

Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) had scheduled for northbound traffic to move onto the new upgrade last night, but rain meant it was not safe to make the change.

As a result, the northbound south Tweed exit, usually accessed from the right hand lane, had to be relocated to the left hand lane using a temporary off-ramp.

Despite the RMS insisting extra signs were put in place, many motorists missed the new exit completely causing a bottleneck at the Kennedy Dr roundabout.

Kennedy Dr is notoriously busy and at 8.30am with extra motorists attempting to turn around and head back south on the highway, the traffic quickly backed up.

Most of the congestion had cleared by 9am.

The move onto the new northbound lanes is now scheduled to occur tonight, weather permitting.

Some additional minor work will be carried out between 7pm and 6am including line marking, barrier relocation and resurfacing.

Traffic control will be in place and minimal delays are expected.
