Trainer to outline plans for wonder mare Winx

WINX's racing future is expected to become clearer Friday as Thomas Hobson's flickering Melbourne Cup fate is likely to remain in limbo right up until tomorrow's final acceptance deadline.

Trainer Chris Waller will front the media Friday morning as speculation intensifies over wonder mare Winx's immediate future.

The champion was spelled after her two previous Cox Plate victories but no decision has been made yet on whether she will progress this year to the Emirates Stakes on the final day of the Melbourne Cup carnival.

While Winx's destiny rests in Waller's hands, Thomas Hobson now needs a miracle to gain a Cup berth.

A TAB $21 chance, the Irish stayer sits at 26th in the Cup order of entry and could be pushed lower by the winner of tomorrow's Lexus Stakes.

Godolphin's Charlie Appleby indicated overnight a decision on Bendigo Cup winner Qewy, who sits at No 21, won't be made until tomorrow.

The veteran finished fourth in last year's Cup and broke the Bendigo Cup record on Wednesday but Appleby remains uncertain over a Cup start.

Gallante, which is also safely in the field at No 20, could be among the final acceptors if wet weather materialises.

If so, owner Lloyd Williams could have seven runners.

The others are favourite and defending champion Almandin, Johannes Vermeer, Rekindling, US Army Ranger and Bondi Beach.

And Aloft, currently 28th, could parachute into the Cup by winning the Lexus.

Of the 10 runners in the Lexus, eight remain in the Cup and the market suggests one of them will claim the "golden ticket” into the Cup.

Harlem, Geelong Cup winner Vengeur Masque, Aloft and Kellstorm are among the leading chances while Havana Cooler and Ecuador are the only two Lexus runners not entered in the Cup.

Racing Victoria vets will continue monitor all horses still in Cup contention.

Vets inspected several runners yesterday with no abnormalities detected.
