Transgender teen assaulted while supporting yes campaign

POLICE have charged a 32-year-old man from Taroona over the alleged attack on a transgender teenager during a marriage equality debate in Hobart.

The man was charged with common assault over an incident that allegedly occurred on Friday in Hobart's Elizabeth Mall.

Police said the man and the alleged victim - 16-year-old Thalia Black - were not known to each other.

"Any violence in our community is unacceptable. Tasmania is a safe place to live and Tasmania Police takes any incidents of violence seriously," Tasmania Police said in a statement.
